Latin American EAs: the real quality and cost tradeoffs

A LATAM EA costing 60% less will handle your calendar as well as a premium US-based EA in San Francisco. That's not always true, but it's true often enough to matter.

The Latin America EA market has exploded in the past five years. Companies like Time Etc and Fancy Hands now source heavily from Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina. The reason is simple: you get 80% of the quality at 40% of the cost.

What you actually get for competitive rates

Most Latin American EAs cost 40% to 60% less than US-based equivalents through managed platforms. At this price point, you're getting someone with a college degree, fluent English, and 2-5 years of remote work experience.

I've worked with EAs from Bogota who managed complex travel itineraries flawlessly. They book flights, coordinate hotel stays, and handle visa requirements without hand-holding. The same tasks that cost significantly more through a US-based service.

The communication is where you notice the difference. A US-based EA might anticipate your needs and proactively suggest solutions. A Latin American EA will execute exactly what you ask for, but won't necessarily read between the lines.

This isn't a language barrier issue. It's a cultural working style difference. Latin American business culture tends to be more hierarchical. Your EA will wait for clear direction rather than taking initiative.

Time zones work in your favor

If you're on the East Coast, Colombian and Venezuelan EAs are in your exact time zone. Mexican EAs are one hour behind at most. This beats dealing with Filipino EAs who are 12 hours ahead.

Real-time communication matters more than most founders realize. When your EA can respond to Slack messages during your workday, projects move faster. No more waiting overnight for responses to urgent requests.

Argentinian EAs are 2-3 hours ahead of Eastern Time, depending on the season. Still manageable for most US executives.

The specialization gap

Latin American EAs excel at administrative work, customer service, and basic marketing tasks. They struggle with specialized US business knowledge.

Don't expect them to understand US tax implications, complex healthcare systems, or industry-specific regulations. A Mexican EA won't know the difference between a 1099 and W2 without explanation.

For general business support, this doesn't matter. For finance-heavy or compliance-heavy work, you'll need someone US-based or willing to invest training time.

Quality varies wildly by country

Colombian EAs have the best reputation for reliability and English proficiency. The country has invested heavily in English education and remote work infrastructure.

Mexican EAs are hit or miss. Northern Mexico (closer to the US border) produces higher quality candidates than southern regions. Mexico City has excellent talent but commands higher rates.

Argentinian EAs often have the strongest educational backgrounds but can be harder to retain. Many treat EA work as temporary while pursuing other careers.

Venezuelan EAs are often overqualified due to economic circumstances. You might get someone with an MBA at a fraction of US rates. The work quality is excellent, but turnover can be high as they search for higher-paying opportunities.

Where to find them without getting burned

Skip general freelancer platforms like Upwork for EA work. Too much noise, too little vetting.

Belay sources from Latin America but doesn't specify which countries. Their screening process filters out most quality issues, but you pay a premium for the curation.

Time Etc has a large Mexican workforce. Their EAs are solid for basic administrative tasks but don't expect strategic thinking.

For direct hiring, RemoteCoWorker and VANetworking focus specifically on Latin American talent. You'll do more screening yourself but pay lower rates.

The sweet spot is working directly with someone who has 3+ years of remote experience with US clients. They understand your expectations and won't need extensive cultural onboarding.
